Arctic Finland: polar night, aurora, and a snow season that runs far longer than the Alps. Finnish lapland has a strongly continental year. Highs swing roughly 27 °C between January (-9 °C) and July (18 °C), so the month you pick changes the trip entirely.

Measured against a snow trip, the conditions hold up November to March. January is the most consistent single month: highs near -9 °C, nights around -14 °C, and roughly 40 mm of precipitation across the month.

What rules months out here is temperature and snow cover, not any composite judgement. May is the weakest month on these criteria.

Visitor numbers follow their own curve. Recorded overnight stays peak in the two weeks from 2 July at about 1.5 times an average fortnight for this region, against 0.5 times in May. On the separate question of how much tourism the area carries all year, Rovaniemi sits in the 103rd densest of 294 European regions, at 6.2 overnight stays per resident a year.

April sits just outside the window, with part of the month working and part not. These are usually the interesting weeks: conditions are close to the peak-season answer while prices and crowds are not. Figures are 30-year climatology sampled at Rovaniemi, Levi, Saariselka, Yllas and Kittila, averaged across those locations, from ERA5-Land reanalysis fitted with a harmonic seasonal cycle and a trend term, evaluated for 2026. Sampling named towns rather than averaging the whole region avoids blending valley and mountain conditions into a figure true of neither.
