Geothermal country, volcanic plateaus and a subtropical north — milder and busier than the South Island. Daytime highs in New Zealand's North Island run from about 12 °C in July to 22 °C in January, an annual range of roughly 10 °C.

Measured against a hiking trip, the conditions hold up March. March is the most consistent single month: highs near 20 °C, nights around 14 °C, and roughly 88 mm of rain across the month.
